In this tutorial, learn to use Melodyne directly inside the Pro Tools Editor Window so you can start tuning vocals now. Melodyne Essential has now been integrated directly into the Pro Tools editing workflow with the release of Pro Tools 2022.9. This integration allows you to save immense time without having to transfer audio into or out of Melodyne.
The best way to add presence and shape tone is with an analog modeled EQ. These equalizers add, warmth, presence, punch, character, and sheen to vocals. If you have a dull or buried vocal, try using the Maag EQ4 to put your vocal at the front of the mix.
Academy.fm Using Melodyne For Vocal Editing
Melodyne is a great pitching and time-stretching tool. A vocal auto-correction tool, if you may. But it can also be used in a creative manner to create unique robotic vocal effects. I will be using the Melodyne Editor plugin in Logic, but this can be achieved with Melodyne's other products as well, such as Melodyne Studio, Melodyne Assistant and Melodyne Essential.
Melodyne 5 Studio is the complete Melodyne, with all Melodyne's unique functions and possibilities. For professional vocal editing, choirs, instruments of all kinds, and samples. And with a multi-track workflow unsurpassed in terms of ease-of-use and musicality.
While SpectraLayers has a range of editing tools, only a small number are useful for this task. One is particularly handy: the Harmonics Selection tool. This allows you (using the mouse) to trace a clear melodic line such as that provided by our lead vocal in the sparse mix. As if by magic, it will detect and select all the harmonics of that line within the spectral display. For the sparse mix, simply tracing over the fundamental frequency of the melody, which was mostly easily visible, allowed me to select what turned out to be the bulk of the vocal. Each time you process a separation, another pair of tracks appears in your project, one containing the separated vocal, the other the instrumental backing track.
For some source material, the automatic process can perform a decent first-pass separation. While ADX Trax Pro cannot guarantee a perfect end result this way, it certainly reduces the time it takes to reach a point at which further editing will yield only marginal improvements in the separation. The ADX Trax Pro Process screen includes a number of options you can explore to try and improve the first-pass vocal separation.
How to use Auto-Tune? Auto-Tune can be used live during the recording process and also in post-recording for editing vocals and pitch correction. It can be used as a VST plugin for different DAW, such as Pro Tools, Logic Pro, Ableton, Cubase, and others.
To choose the Key and the scale, you can use an additional plugin Auto-Key that goes with Auto-Tune Pro. Auto-Key can detect the Key of the song using a vocal or accompaniment track. It will not always choose correctly, but if you cannot determine the key of the song yourself, Auto-Key is your best shot.
Software like AutoTune creates obvious and undesirable tuning artifacts on your vocals and will ruin the qualities that make a vocal performance sound natural and powerful. I will manually tune your vocals with Melodyne to make them sound ready for the radio using my 10 years of experience in the music industry. Based out of LA, I've had the pleasure of working with names such as:
Absolutely fantastic to work with! He did an incredible job with comping, aligning & tuning my vocals. Any adjustments I requested he did and did them well! I will be using his services again in the future! Thank you TVS!
A: My first priority is always clear and simple communication about materials needed, delivery dates and project details. I also make sure to check in with my clients periodically to make sure that the work is heading in the right direction. For vocal tuning, I tend to start by tuning the lead vocal by hand using Melodyne in relation to the instrumental. Once completed, I'll send an export back to the client for approval, and then match the tuning of the rest of the vocals to the lead vocal. After tuning, I'll begin work on the timing and alignment of the vocals if requested. At this point I send an export of the tuned/aligned vocals to the client for final approval. On mixing projects, I ask clients for a mix reference that they'd like it to sound similar to. I typically start the mix process by editing, adjusting and balancing the aspects of the reference mix that have been accentuated (rhythm section, vocals, drums, etc.). I do not use templates - every song gets its own unique and independent focus. Using my vast collection of analog emulation plugins, I then apply the same process to the rest of the instrumentation. Once I've achieved a good starting balance, I send the first version to the client to make sure they're happy with the direction it's heading. Then, based upon the feedback, I'll continue to adjust and compare to the reference, send updated versions until we've reached a mix that brings the song to life.
Character: Melodyne is the godfather of all autotune plugins. It allows you to adjust the pitch and timing of a vocal performance with precision and ease. This is the industry standard of vocal editing plugins.
Ill jump in just to get notified of some updates on this .I recently started using Cubase 11 Pro and have been having some serious issues trying to use melodyne in my mixing stage.Ive noticed that a good option is to not edit the audio track before doing melodyne tuning (vocals). All events get a bit laggy and the all session gets a bit messed up, from my short period of using cubase. I prefer the melodyne algorithm to the variaudio , sorry Steinberg.Would be great to have a better user experience in Cubase using melodyne.Im not going to mention other daws because all have issues, not appropriate here , but in Reaper this was an issue and is no longer.Like i said, im new to Cubase so i might be missing some workflow that smooths out the all process. Thanks all and stay safe.
In some cases, using autotune is as easy as punching in the key and how much processing you want to be done to the vocals. Nectar 3 is the perfect example. You can easily set the key and control how heavily correction is applied. But you are also given the option to write in MIDI the notes that the vocal line is supposed to follow. With the number of features included in Nectar 3, this plugin can easily become your one-stop-shop for all of your vocal production needs.
I have a bit of experience using Melodyne on vocals and it works similarly to the way Waves Tune does. It works on a graph with each note being able to be sliced and moved independently with tools to blend transitions that you can add in. This makes minute editing simple and efficient once you have established your workflow on Melodyne.
Sometimes it is not so much of a correctional issue to the vocals as it is a stylistic addition. Look at T-Pain and Cher. Both of them used autotune as an effect on their voices and it has become their vocal style. Neither of them necessarily needed help with their vocal ability, but they liked the sound they got from the outcome of using heavy autotune.
I like to push the vocalist to sing it correctly on their own and perform minor tweaks when working on a song. If the goal is to give the track a certain type of vibe on the vocals, I will bring in the autotune. Even with just using autotune as an effect, it will sound cleaner when used with a better vocal take than layered over top of an out-of-tune one. 2ff7e9595c
